The Alan Hodginson Medal Nomination Process

  1. Submit a Nomination

    Name a gemologist whose generosity, knowledge sharing, and contributions have made a meaningful impact to our profession. Please complete and submit the nomination form, including key details that highlight your nominee’s impact. 

  2. Voting Process

    All nominations are read and vetted by the AGA Award Committee before presentation to the AGA Board of Governors for a vote to narrow the slate of nominations if necessary. AGA Members then cast their vote for the AGA Alan Hodgkinson Medal.

  3. Award Presentation

    The Alan Hodgkinson Medal recipient will be honored during the Gala Awards Ceremony and Dinner-Dance following the annual AGA Gemological Conference in Tucson, Arizona.

Nominations are due by 11:59 pm (Pacific time) on May 19th. Late submissions will be applied to the following year.

The Alan Hodgkinson Medal honors gemologists whose generosity, volunteer service, and shared knowledge strengthen the global gemological community. Inspired by Alan Hodgkinson’s legacy, it recognizes unselfish contributions and lasting impact over position or recognition.

AGA accepts nominations for the Medal throughout the year, but the deadline for each year’s nominations is May 19th. All nominations received after 11:59 pm (Pacific time) on May 19th will be counted toward the following year’s nominations.

No. AGA membership is not required to submit a nomination for the Hodgkinson Medal.

No, the Medal recipient is not required to be an AGA member.

Yes, the Hodgkinson Medal recipient is selected by a majority vote of AGA Members.

It is awarded to gemologists who volunteer without expectation, mentor without reservation, and contribute in ways that strengthen the gemology profession as a whole.

The public announcement is made on July 1st. The award is formally presented at the Gala Dinner-Dance following the AGA Tucson Conference at the beginning of the following year

AGA presents a specially designed medal, and the Hodgkinson family gifts a copy of Alan’s masterpiece, Gem Testing Techniques.
