"The AGA certificate represents something I am very proud of, though it took a while to appreciate fully what it would come to mean to me. Initially, I honestly did not want to apply for yet another thing, nor did I want to be casual about requesting anyone to write references for me. Though they were the colleagues who knew the most about my interests and capabilities, asking Bill Bassett, John Koivula and Dick Hughes for references was daunting, hopeful though I was that I would pass their muster... that I'd achieved a point where I could even ask those three men to begin with was not on my radar! They each took it very seriously which made me think, what do they know about AGA and the role of serious professional organizations that I didn't realize? (Bill drilled me about why I wanted to join and scrutinized the AGA materials thoroughly before writing). When the certificate came with its accompanying literature, I realized yes, this is important and not to be taken lightly: I am agreeing to it; I am pledging to contribute. I am very proud to be part of AGA and to work for its goals."
