Shane McClure, GG & Andy Lucas, GG

Shane F. McClure is Global Director, Colored Stone Services at the GIA Laboratory in Carlsbad, California, USA. A frequently requested speaker at national and international conferences and trade shows with more than 38 years experience in the field of gemstone identification and treatments, he has been a contributing author on many articles published in GIA's quarterly journal Gems & Gemology as well as many other publications.

He has won Gems and Gemology's Most Valuable Article Award eight times on topics such as diffusion-treated sapphires, the identification of filled diamonds, and gemstone enhancement and detection in the 1990's and has twice been an author on articles that have won the American Gem Society's Richard T. Liddicoat award for outstanding journalism in the jewelry trade. In 2007 he was the recipient of the Antonio C. Bonanno award for Excellence in Gemology. Mr. McClure is also a co-editor of the Gem Trade Lab Notes section of Gems & Gemology and an accomplished gem and jewelry photographer and photomicrographer.

Andy Lucas, G.G., G.J., C.G., R.M.V., is currently Education's Manager, Field Gemology at the Gemological Institute of America.

Prior to Andy's career with GIA, he founded and operated an international wholesale and private client retail gemstone, jewelry, and antiquity business, where he bought and sold loose colored stones, diamonds, pearls, finished jewelry, and antiquities. Part of the jewelry business included custom designs, and manufacturing jewelry with custom designed colored stones cut from rough purchased by the company. His GIA career started as an instructor and then moved to developing educational products. Andy now works as a Field Gemologist in GIA's Content Strategy, department researching and documenting the entire mine-to-market gem and jewelry industry for Education and also writes articles and creates documentaries as well as presents seminars for the global trade and public.
