Sarah Steele

Sarah Steele is a Geologist, FGA, DGA and professional lapidary. She is a specialist in natural thermoset and thermoplastic organic materials used in the production of C19th jeweler. Now dedicates much of her time to research into the Jet Group, looking to establish a provenance tool in order to protect indigenous jet manufacturing communities from the threats posed by unpoliced simulants. Jet, almost a pure hydrocarbon, is a difficult material to study from a gemological perspective as most of our 'go-to' methods give no useful signature spectrums to aid in appellation of origin. Recent research collaborations using Proton Induced Gamma Spectroscopy and isotope studies however, are finally shedding light on this most ancient of gem materials.
