The Next Step in Diamond Grading

The future of Diamond Grading is here

For decades, gemologists, diamond graders, and retailers have faced rising costs and a limited supply of natural diamond master stones. Conventional alternatives—such as simulant sets or unregulated tools—often fall short of delivering the precision professionals require.

AGA, Stuller, and GCAL by Sarine have partnered to introduce Certified Hybrid Diamond Master Sets—a groundbreaking solution that blends natural and lab-grown diamonds to deliver precision at an unprecedented value.

The exact cost of the sets has not yet been determined. The goal is to provide an essential gemological tool that is both accessible and affordable. The final pricing will largely depend on the scalability of the comprehensive screening process needed to identify suitable master stones.

Selecting stones that meet the strict criteria for Master designation requires multiple rounds of screening and grading. Creating the prototype set highlighted the need to refine this process to ensure consistent availability. Efforts are now underway to scale up both selection and screening procedures. The first batch of Certified Hybrid Diamond Master sets is expected to be available this fall.

The Certified Hybrid Diamond Master sets will comprise seven stones. E-F-G are synthetic diamonds and H-I-J-K are natural diamonds.

The stones in the Certified Hybrid Diamond Master sets will be between 0.35ct and 0.55ct each.

The selected master diamonds will have a clarity grade of VS2 or higher, with no black or dark inclusions visible to the unaided eye in the table down position.

Cut quality must meet Very Good or Excellent standards for proportions, polish, and symmetry. Fluorescence will be limited to ‘None’ or ‘Very Faint Blue’ (considered negligible). In terms of color, all diamonds will exhibit a pure yellow hue without any brown, gray, or other modifying tones.

Each master set is certified by GCAL by Sarine and graded to represent the top of its respective color grade (precision grade). GCAL by Sarine utilizes a dual approach—combining expert human graders with advanced Sarine AI color grading technology.

The Sarine AI system is built on extensive research and data gathered from thousands of natural diamonds accompanied by GIA grading reports. This data-driven foundation gives the Sarine system a unique advantage in tracking how diamonds are actually being graded and traded across the industry today.

By finalizing all grading at a single location against a consistent reference master set, GCAL by Sarine ensures that each set is both internally consistent and aligned with current GIA grading practices.

Prospective buyers are invited to join the waiting list through the AGA website or by contacting Stuller Diamonds and Gemstones Customer Service. Simply select the waitlist option on the form to join. When a new batch of sets becomes available, Stuller will notify those on the list and offer the sets on a first-come, first-served basis.

Initial candidates for the master sets are selected using Sarine AI color grading systems from thousands of diamonds at the manufacturing level. These pre-screened diamonds are then sorted and evaluated by Stuller to ensure they meet all specified criteria.

Selected stones are sent to GCAL by Sarine’s New York City laboratory, where they undergo additional AI grading, followed by final analysis and approval by several senior expert graders. This multi-step process ensures precision, consistency, and compliance with strict grading standards, and each stone is accompanied by a GCAL Certificate.

To ensure consistency, each master stone is graded multiple times using both advanced Sarine AI color grading technology and human expert review. The Sarine AI system uses high-precision cameras, lenses, and controlled lighting conditions. It is calibrated multiple times daily, and each scan is verified for proper alignment and calibration.

The system maintains a deviation tolerance of ±0.10 of a numeric grade. Each color grade represents a 1.00 numeric range, and only diamonds falling within the top 20% of a given grade (top 1/5) are considered eligible as potential master stones.

This rigorous technological framework, combined with expert oversight and finalization in a single lab location, ensures the highest level of consistency and reliability across all master sets.
